How it works
- Plan your week in the meal planner, or open an example week.
- Choose the source here. We add up every portion of every food across the week.
- Shop by section. Foods are grouped as produce, meat and seafood, dairy, grains, canned goods and so on, so you walk the store once.
Shopping tips for a carbohydrate-aware kitchen
- Read the label for total carbohydrate, fiber and added sugars, and compare the serving size on the label to your real portion.
- Choose canned beans and vegetables with no added sugar, and rinse canned beans to cut sodium.
- Buy fruit and vegetables in the form you will use: fresh, or frozen without sauces or sugar.
- Shop the edges of the store first, for produce, eggs, dairy and proteins, then the aisles for the staples on your list.
- Be careful with “sugar-free” and “diabetic” labels. They do not mean carbohydrate-free. Check the panel.
The quantities are portions from your plan, with an approximate weight, so round up to the package sizes you find. Browse carbs for 80 foods before you shop.
Frequently asked questions
What should be on a diabetic grocery list?
There is no required list. Most people build one around vegetables, lean proteins, beans, whole grains, fruit in measured portions, plain dairy or alternatives, and healthy fats, then add the foods their care team or dietitian suggests.
Where does the list come from?
From a week you plan in the meal planner, or from one of the four example weeks. The same engine adds up every portion and groups the foods by store section.
Is my plan sent anywhere?
No. Your saved plan is read from this browser only, and the list is built here on your device.
Can I print it?
Yes. Use the print button; the print view shows the list only, with a box next to each item.
Do the quantities include waste or packages?
No. Quantities are the portions you planned, with an approximate weight. Round up to the package sizes you find at the store.
