Sweet Potato Fries and Diabetes: Carbs, Glycemic Index and Portions
A 3 ounce serving of frozen sweet potato fries has about 22 g of carbohydrate (19 g net). Glycemic index: no value in the tables we use. Occasionally, in measured portions. They are a starchy food cooked in oil, so both carbohydrate and fat count.
Sweet potato fries get a health halo, but they are still fries: sweet potato is a starch, and frying or coating adds fat and sometimes sugar. A 3 ounce serving is much smaller than a basket.
Baking at home with a little olive oil gives you control of the oil and salt. Check frozen bag labels, as some varieties are coated with starch or sugar.

Source: USDA FoodData Central, FDC ID 168015 (Sweet potato fries, frozen). Net carbs here means carbohydrate minus fiber. “Net carbs” is not an FDA-defined term, so total carbs are shown too. Values are estimates for a typical item; brands, ripeness and size vary.
Glycemic index and glycemic load
Glycemic index: no value shown. No sweet potato fries entry; the tables list French fries and boiled sweet potato only. We do not estimate values that are not published.
Glycemic index is only one piece of the picture. The same food can give a different response depending on ripeness, cooking, what you eat it with and your own body, so your meter or CGM is the best guide.
How sweet potato fries fit the plate method
Sweet Potato Fries count toward the carbohydrate quarter of the plate in the plate method, along with grains, starchy vegetables, fruit and milk. The CDC describes the plate method as half non-starchy vegetables, a quarter protein and a quarter carbohydrate foods. See the diabetic meal plan guide for how it works, or drop sweet potato fries onto a meal in the meal planner to watch the plate fill.
Portion ideas and pairings

Pairs well with: a vegetable side, a grilled protein, a salad instead of a second starch.
